Barbara Garcia

inducted into the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude in January 2019 for her astounding contributions to public health in San Francisco and beyond.

Former director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Barbara Garcia was honored by leaders in the HIV community for her longstanding support of HIV treatment and prevention efforts, her visionary integration of services under a broader wellness approach, and for being an example as a queer leader of color in public health. A theme during the remarks people made, were stories of being challenged or invited by Barbara to "communicate and collaborate". As part of her vision to strengthen community based efforts and be accountable for public health dollars, Barbara made her mark in supporting efforts for deeper collaborative work and integration.

I caped Barbara with a long cape, to make a statement. She is fierce and classy. I wanted a cape that gave notice of the magnitude of the shero wearing it. I am grateful to Barbara's work beyond HIV, as well. For strengthening the public health infrastructure for families throughout San Francisco.

About the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude

“The plain fact is that the world does not need more successful people, but it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane.” David Orr

I deeply admire those who "live well in their places." The ordinary and the unsung who offer to the world the very best parts of themselves without expectation.

This is a beautiful expression of love in her calm, persistent, generous manner - offering a ripple of change (a metamorphosis) to the world.

Inductees to the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude are caped in recognition of their contributions to a love-filled world.
