Superhero: Benjamin Wachs
I love this photo of the bold and brave Benjamin Wachs. Two weeks ago, I bumped into him at the 24th Street and Mission BART station. We'd been out of touch for a few years, though I'd kept up with his writing and subsequent book publication via a friend. As we hugged on the plaza near the BART escalator and quickly caught up with one another.....I remembered making him this cape. Benjamin was caped before I knew it was a caping and before the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude existed. I can now remember that caping Benjamin gave me the feeling inside you want more of. So, there it happens. We met in a writing workshop, me a newbie, and Benjamin a faithful. He inspires me because he continues (to this day) to go to the writing workshop writing is what he does, who he is, how he creates and gives. I learn from him: do what you love, over and over again. He has a keen ability to string together words flawlessly and on the fly. And he listens with a warm, open energy whenever anyone else in the group reads their work. From this I learn to be seen, to practice speaking aloud what I've penned to paper. When I heard he was heading to Burning Man as the volunteer coordinator of the Media Mecca, I asked about his costume. He said, "I have no costume." I need to make you a cape! So just in time for him to head out to the Playa, this collared cape emerged from the presser foot of my sewing machine sending him on his journey with the proper regal attire. Welcome lately to the Superhero Hall of Gratitude, Benjamin!
About the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude!
“The plain fact is that the world does not need more successful people, but it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane.” David Orr
I deeply admire those who “live well in their places.” The ordinary and the unsung who offer to the world the very best parts of themselves without expectation. This is a beautiful expression of love in her calm, persistent, generous manner – offering a ripple of change (a metamorphosis) to the world. Inductees to the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude are caped in recognition of their contributions to a love-filled world.
