Bring your dead. We await you. #HandsUpOnlyLove
November 2nd, 2014 thousands of people descended upon Garfield Park for the Marigold Project's festival of altars following the Dia de los Muertos procession through San Francisco's Mission District. My altar Hands Up! Only Love! took form at the corner of Harrison and 25th, greeting reverently the processional as it arrived. In the style of Shirin Barghi's stunning last words my daughter added the names and dates of many of the young men whose words are captured in her graphics. Some came to witness, others to remember and others to heal. The video below captures some of the beautiful, serene scene. There are notes on the fence to papa, abuela, mi angel. At times we had no more space at the table and people began using each others backs to write their notes. Look for the three starbursts, lined up just so on top of one of the altars. So much love.Dear dead, we've awaited you all year. We are ready to dance.WE REMEMBER YOU, some of names from the fence: Emmett Till * Alejandro Nieto * Allen Calloway * Dad * Micheal * Shadow * Kollin Eldert * Uncle John * Micheal Brown * Trayvon Martin * Patrick * Jonahtan Ferrell
"You taught me that you can chose to be brave even when life is difficult and unfair. Love is justice."
"Pops: I made it."
"We miss you and we love you so much."
"You have been watching over me. Thank you."
