The very first caping!  Boomba was inducted into what would later become the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude in October 2012 at his first birthday party with this cape and a matching cape for his stuffed bear. Boomba took his first breaths on this earth the same day my brother took his last. As I figured out the ways one carries on the world after such loss, Boomba was also figuring out how to live on this world. This figuring out had us both crying a lot.  Boomba screamed and cried for no reason anyone, including his mama, could figure out. Not quite as often and in a more reserved fashion, I would begin crying without a moment's notice or explanation because of a memory or reminder elicited by a smell, an overheard conversation, a pang of guilt or loneliness. Taking Boomba for long walks up and down the hills of San Francisco was a way either one of us could cry without explaining to the other why.  When he celebrated his first birthday I felt totally proud of his mama for making it 365 sleep deprived nights, happy to be a part of Boomba's disruption of the status quo, and internally grateful for my own milestone having survived one year.  Ultimately, these themes are what inspired more capings and the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude: positive disruption of the status quo, determination, a sense of finding oneself more deeply through this person's life, gratitude for the connection.

About the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude!

“The plain fact is that the world does not need more successful people, but it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane.” David Orr

I deeply admire those who "live well in their places." The ordinary and the unsung who offer to the world the very best parts of themselves without expectation. This is a beautiful expression of love in her calm, persistent, generous manner - offering a ripple of change (a metamorphosis) to the world. Inductees to the Love Superhero Hall of Gratitude are caped in recognition of their contributions to a love-filled world.
